Spreading the Love of Reading: Read Across America Day at United Way

Baytown, TX (March 6, 2025) — In celebration of Read Across America Day this week, United Way of Greater Baytown Area and Chambers County (UWGBACC) united staff, board members, and community partners to inspire a lifelong love of reading among local students. Volunteers visited classrooms across the community, bringing stories to life and sharing the transformative power of books.

"Reading is the foundation for learning and opportunity," said Kaci Pena, Community Engagement Director at United Way. "Through stories, we can travel the world, embark on adventures beyond imagination, and unlock doors to new possibilities. By engaging with students today, we are fostering a love for reading that can shape their futures."

As part of the celebration, over 500 students received a brand-new book, made possible through the generosity of ExxonMobil Baytown. Each book included a special bookmark highlighting the Little Free Library network, a United Way-supported initiative that ensures access to free books for readers of all ages. With more than 20 Little Free Libraries strategically placed throughout the community, UWGBACC is committed to making literacy resources available to everyone.

"United Way believes that every child should have the tools they need to learn and succeed," said Pena. "By providing access to books and encouraging reading, we are helping build stronger, more literate communities."
